8/365: Bokeh Anyone?

So this is my first true attempt at bokeh. Sure I've taken some pictures that ended up with bokeh in them, but I wasn't trying to achieve bokeh. I just found out, this week, what bokeh actually is...and I love it. And am completely obsessed with it! *peeping through its window saying, "bokeh, i seeeeeee, you"* I've decided to end every week (Thursday) with a bokeh image...yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I'm a day off, but I just had this wonderfully, brillant, bokeh idea...gimme a break, geesh.

What type of bokeh do you feel I achieved?:
  1. good?
  2. bad?
  3. average?
  4.  immpecable?
  5. you call that bokeh? sam, you wouldn't know bokeh if it slapped you in the face!
Any help/advice that you all can give me on this topic would be greatly appreciated. I wish for, Thursday, Dec. 31st, 2010's bokeh to be sooooooo good that I need a cigarette 2 cigarettes afterwards :)

What I love about this photograph: It's bokeh. Come on, smile and wave at the bokeh!
Technical Stuff: Nikon D40; 55.0mm; 1/200s; f/7.1; ISO 200

I'm in love with bokeh. We're having a torrid love affair. I've had to take a break from bokeh because it was just too much for my fragile emotional state.

Um... what?

I think the bokeh is lovely in this shot. The colors are beautiful and they just melt together to make such a beautiful backdrop for that single leaf.

Bokeh it is, and I reckon good bokeh! Its glittering :D If I had to say anything, I would maybe tone down the exposure a tiny bit and it may define the bokeh a bit better but it really is a great shot.

Hi Samantha,
If you like Bokeh so much, you should consider getting a fast prime lens. I have the Nikon AF-S 35mm f/1.8 and would gladly recommend it. Here's a short review I wrote about it: http://www.shutteria.com/2009/09/nikon-35mm-lens.html

It's very affordable too and will work perfectly with your D40.

Ahhhh, yes Bokeh, how I love thee? I love bokeh very much. I don't know a lot about it, but I'm learning too. If you have a good website to share on this subject please do. I seem to get the best bokeh from my 85mm f1.8 lens.

Is there such a thing as bad bokeh? Hmmmm, something to ponder.

Definitely Bokeh. I have a love/hate relationship with it. Sometimes I love it, sometimes I hate it. heh I like it in this instance. :0)

Its a very nice shot, but to be sincere (I'll say its average bokeh), but you're not to blame.

Its a good bokeh, don't get me wrong but a perfect bokeh does not only need the photographers technique, but also a good quality lens.

I must confess that I had never heard of bokeh before, so I had to google it before I could answer. I think you achieved good bokeh!

One other blog I follow has some bokeh, but I'm afraid it's above my pay grade. Any info you can share would be appreciated!

Yes, if you want really good bokeh then you need a lens that opens up to 1.8 or lower (or 2.8 for a telephoto). You can get it being more closed up, but there's nothing like super wide open bokeh, mmmmmm. I LOVE my 85mm 1.8 for bokeh shots, I have some nice ones on my blog right now, actually. It's not a macro lens, but it works fine for me for now.

mmmm...bokeh!

Check out http://thepioneerwoman.com/photography/. She just did a series on "holiday bokeh". Some amazing shots, great inspiration!

I had to look up the term as well. But now that I know what it is, I'm familiar with the technique--just not the vocabulary. ;o)

The blurring has a lovely effect in this image. Keep experimenting!
